A Real Banff Elopement Experience: What Your Day Can Look Like

YOUR DREAM BANFF ELOPEMENT, EXACTLY AS YOU WANT IT.

Imagine waking up in a beautiful mountain hotel, coffee in hand, with an entire day ahead of you to celebrate your love story. No seating charts, no rushing between wedding events, no worrying about entertaining a hundred guests. Just the two of you, the Canadian Rockies, and a wedding day designed entirely around what makes you happiest together.

Maybe your morning starts with getting ready together in your hotel room, sharing a few laughs and enjoying the excitement of finally getting married. Perhaps you visit a quiet alpine lake, exchange vows surrounded by towering mountains, stop for a latte in Banff, and spend the afternoon exploring beautiful hidden locations. You might even finish the day with a cozy dinner, a horseback ride, or a spontaneous adventure you never could have planned.

This is what a Banff elopement can look like.

After 15 years of photographing intimate weddings and helping couples plan their elopement experiences in Banff and the Canadian Rockies, I've learned that the most meaningful wedding days aren't necessarily the ones with the most elaborate details. They're the ones that genuinely reflect the couple.

If you're dreaming of a romantic, adventurous, and relaxed destination wedding in Banff, I'd love to show you what's possible!

Before we get to a sample timeline below for a full-day Banff elopement, here are some elopement photos to inspire what your own intimate wedding in the Canadian Rockies could look like.

What Does a Real Banff Elopement Day Look Like?

One of the things I love most about photographing elopements is that no two wedding days ever look the same.

Some couples want to explore multiple mountain locations and spend the entire day adventuring together. Others prefer a slower, more intimate experience with beautiful scenery, a meaningful ceremony, and plenty of time to simply enjoy being newly married.

There isn't one right way to elope.

When I help my couples plan their wedding day, we start by talking about what matters most to them. What do they enjoy doing together? Are they adventurous? Do they love exploring new places? Are they happiest enjoying a quiet morning with coffee, or would they rather spend the day hiking and discovering beautiful mountain scenery?

From there, we create a timeline and experience that feels completely personal.

Here is an example of what a full-day Banff elopement could look like.

A Sample Full-Day Banff Elopement Timeline

8:00 AM – A Relaxed Morning Together

One of my favourite ways to begin an elopement day is with the couple getting ready together in their hotel room.

There is something incredibly special about these quieter moments. Maybe you're enjoying coffee together, listening to your favourite music, helping each other with the final details, or simply taking in the excitement of the day ahead.

Some couples choose to see each other throughout the getting-ready process, while others prefer to save the big reveal for a first look once they're both dressed and ready.

Both options are wonderful!

I love documenting these moments because your wedding story doesn't begin when you walk down an aisle or exchange vows. It begins with the anticipation, excitement, little glances, and genuine emotions that unfold throughout the day.

Your photographs should tell that entire story.

9:30 AM – Your First Look and Mountain Adventure Begins

Once you're both ready, we can head out for your first look.

This could happen somewhere beautiful near your accommodation, at a quiet mountain viewpoint, or beside a stunning alpine lake.

A first look gives you the opportunity to see each other privately, take a deep breath, and enjoy that special moment before the rest of the day's adventures begin.

From here, we'll start exploring!

One of the biggest advantages of having a full-day elopement is that we're not limited to just one location. We can visit several beautiful spots throughout the Canadian Rockies, each offering something a little different.

Some locations might have dramatic mountain backdrops, while others offer peaceful lakeside scenery or beautiful forest surroundings.

And don't worry about knowing where to go. Helping couples discover incredible locations is one of my favourite parts of the planning process.

11:00 AM – Exploring Banff's Beautiful Hidden Gems

This is where your elopement starts to feel like a true adventure.

Rather than spending the entire day at one location, we can build in time to explore several beautiful places throughout Banff and the surrounding Canadian Rockies.

You might find yourselves wandering along a peaceful lakeshore, enjoying a quiet mountain viewpoint, or discovering a beautiful location you never would have found on your own.

Choosing the right locations is one of the most important parts of planning a Banff elopement.

Many couples arrive dreaming of famous places like Lake Louise and Moraine Lake. And while these locations are undeniably beautiful, they aren't necessarily the best fit for everyone.

If you envision a private, intimate experience away from crowds, there may be other locations that suit you much better.

Over the past 15 years, I've developed an extensive knowledge of the area and have an exclusive location guide available to my couples. It gives you plenty of options to explore, depending on what matters most to you.

Whether you're dreaming of dramatic mountain views, peaceful lakeside scenery, or quieter hidden gems, I'll help you find locations that fit your vision.

12:30 PM – A Little Coffee Break or Cozy Lunch

Your wedding day doesn't need to be a nonstop photoshoot!

Some of my favourite elopement moments happen during the little breaks in between adventures.

Maybe we stop for a latte in Banff, find a cozy spot for lunch, or enjoy a little picnic with a beautiful mountain view.

These moments are part of your wedding experience, too.

I love incorporating personal details into my couples' days. If you enjoy stopping for coffee together, let's make time for that. If a cozy lunch is more your style, let's include it. If you're happiest exploring the outdoors, we'll build your day around adventure.

Your wedding should feel like a really wonderful day together, not a checklist of photographs you need to get through.

2:00 PM – Your Intimate Wedding Ceremony

Now comes one of the most meaningful parts of your day: getting married!

Imagine exchanging vows beside a beautiful alpine lake, surrounded by towering mountain peaks and the incredible scenery of the Canadian Rockies.

Your ceremony can be simple and intimate, with just the two of you, your officiant, and me documenting the experience.

You don't need a large wedding party or elaborate decorations to make this moment meaningful.

You simply need a place that feels special, words that come from the heart, and the person you love standing beside you.

I also work with couples to help coordinate their wedding commissioner so that the legal side of getting married is taken care of.

And remember, mountain weather doesn't always cooperate!

During one of my Bow Lake elopements, the couple, their officiant from Urban Officiant, and I were just beginning their lakeside ceremony when we spotted an enormous wall of rain rolling over the mountains toward us.

Within moments, everyone was absolutely soaked!

We quickly grabbed our umbrellas, gathered our things, and ran for shelter under a nearby building. The rain wasn't letting up anytime soon, so with everyone laughing, we decided to finish the ceremony underneath the covered roof.

Was it the ceremony we originally planned? Not exactly!

But it became one of those spontaneous, unforgettable memories that made their wedding day uniquely theirs.

That's the beauty of eloping in the mountains. Sometimes the unexpected moments become the best stories.

3:00 PM – Celebrating With More Mountain Adventures

You're married! Now it's time to celebrate.

Depending on what you love doing together, the afternoon could include even more exploring and adventure.

Here are a few ideas I love incorporating into elopement days:

  • Exploring additional mountain viewpoints and beautiful lakeside locations.

  • Enjoying a horseback riding adventure.

  • Finding a scenic spot to enjoy champagne together.

  • Taking a little hike to discover another beautiful view.

  • Stopping along the road when we spot mountain goats or other wildlife (always keeping a respectful distance!).

  • Enjoying a spontaneous adventure that wasn't even on the original timeline.

I've had couples become unexpected celebrities during their elopement days, with entire tourist busloads of people wanting photographs with them!

You never quite know what will happen in Banff. One minute you're enjoying a quiet mountain road, and the next you're sharing your wedding day with a bus full of excited tourists.

It's all part of the fun!

5:00 PM – A Relaxed Evening and Romantic Dinner

After a full day of exploring, celebrating, and making memories, you can finish your wedding day however feels right for you.

Perhaps you enjoy a beautiful dinner in Banff, return to your hotel for a little relaxation, or head out for one final scenic stop.

You might even want to catch the evening light for a few more photographs.

The important thing is that your day doesn't have to end the moment the ceremony is over.

You've travelled to one of the most beautiful places in the world to get married. Give yourselves permission to enjoy it!

This is just one example of what your day could look like. Your actual timeline will depend on your preferred locations, activities, season, travel time, and the overall experience you want.

Why I Recommend a Full-Day Banff Elopement

One of the biggest things I encourage my couples to consider is how much time they want to spend enjoying their wedding day.

It's tempting to think that because you're having an intimate wedding, you only need a few hours.

But here's what I often see: couples try to squeeze their ceremony, portraits, multiple locations, and activities into a very short window. Suddenly, they're rushing from one place to another, watching the clock, and worrying about staying on schedule.

That's not how I want anyone to experience their wedding day!

After 15 years of photographing intimate weddings, I truly believe that a relaxed timeline makes an enormous difference.

Having more time gives us the flexibility to:

  • Enjoy a relaxed morning without rushing.

  • Visit multiple beautiful locations.

  • Allow time for unexpected stops and spontaneous adventures.

  • Incorporate meaningful activities that reflect your relationship.

  • Work around changing mountain weather and road conditions.

  • Capture genuine moments as they happen rather than constantly posing for photographs.

  • Simply slow down and enjoy being together.

Your wedding day should be something you experience, not something you rush through.

Choosing the Perfect Location for Your Banff Elopement

If there's one question I hear from couples planning their Banff elopement, it's usually: "Where should we get married?"

And honestly, choosing one single best location is impossible!

It all depends on what matters most to you.

Some couples dream of iconic turquoise lakes and dramatic mountain scenery. Others want somewhere quieter, where they can enjoy their vows without feeling surrounded by tourists.

Lake Louise and Moraine Lake are two of the most recognizable locations in the Canadian Rockies, and for good reason. They're breathtaking!

However, their popularity can also mean crowds, transportation logistics, and less privacy.

For couples who are more introverted or envision a peaceful, intimate experience, I often recommend exploring other locations.

Here are some things I consider when helping couples choose their locations:

Privacy: Would you prefer a quieter setting away from the crowds, or are you happy to embrace the excitement of a famous Banff location?

Scenery: Are you dreaming of turquoise water, towering peaks, dramatic mountain valleys, forests, or a combination?

Adventure level: Would you enjoy a short walk to a beautiful viewpoint, or are you excited about incorporating a hike or another outdoor adventure?

Accessibility: How much walking are you comfortable with? Are there mobility considerations we should plan around?

Season: Some locations are especially beautiful at certain times of the year, while weather, road access, and seasonal restrictions can affect what's possible.

Over the years, I've put together an exclusive list of locations for my couples, giving them plenty of options to explore.

Rather than sending you to the same famous locations everyone else visits, I want to help you discover somewhere that genuinely fits your vision.

What If the Weather Doesn't Cooperate?

Let's talk about mountain weather!

One thing I've learned after 15 years of photographing elopements in the Canadian Rockies is that the weather can be unpredictable.

A beautiful sunny morning can quickly turn into rain, wind, or even snow, depending on the season.

And while we always hope for beautiful weather, I never want my couples to feel that their entire wedding day depends on having a perfect forecast.

This is where local knowledge and flexibility become so important.

When helping plan your day, I consider things like:

  • Seasonal weather patterns.

  • Road and location accessibility.

  • Travel time between locations.

  • Alternative locations if conditions change.

  • Timing your activities around the best available conditions.

Having backup options doesn't mean expecting something to go wrong. It simply means being prepared so you can relax and enjoy the experience.

And sometimes, just like my Bow Lake couple discovered, an unexpected rainstorm becomes one of your favourite wedding memories!

How Much Does a Banff Elopement Cost?

One of the biggest misconceptions about destination elopements is that they have to be incredibly expensive.

The wonderful thing about an intimate wedding is that you can choose exactly where you want to invest your money.

Based on the elopement experiences I help couples plan, it's possible to have a beautiful, all-inclusive Banff elopement for under $10,000 CAD.

That can include:

  • Professional elopement photography and planning assistance.

  • Wedding officiant or commissioner.

  • Marriage licence.

  • Bridal bouquet and flowers.

  • Hair and makeup.

  • Hotel or accommodation.

  • Transportation.

  • Activities and special experiences.

  • Other personal wedding details.

Of course, your final budget will depend on your accommodation, season, activities, and personal preferences.

You can create a beautiful, luxurious-feeling wedding experience without the expense of hosting a large traditional wedding.

And one of the best parts? You get to spend your budget on things that actually matter to you as a couple.

Do You Have to Be Comfortable in Front of the Camera?

Absolutely not!

This is something I want every couple to know.

You don't need to be models, know how to pose, or have any previous experience being photographed to have beautiful wedding photographs.

In fact, many of my couples tell me they're camera-shy or feel a little awkward having their photographs taken.

That's completely okay.

My approach is about creating an experience where you can relax, have fun, and focus on each other.

Rather than spending the entire day directing poses, I encourage natural interactions, movement, exploring, and enjoying the moments as they unfold.

I'll guide you when needed, help you feel comfortable, and make sure you look and feel your best.

My goal is to capture the real emotions, genuine laughter, quiet moments, and little interactions that make your relationship yours.

When you look back at your photographs years from now, I want you to remember exactly how your wedding day felt.

My Philosophy: Your Elopement Should Feel Like YOU

After 15 years of photographing hundreds of intimate weddings, there's one thing I know for certain.

The best elopements aren't necessarily the ones with the fanciest details, the most elaborate ceremonies, or the most Instagram-famous locations.

They're the ones that feel authentic.

If you love playing Scrabble together, let's start your morning with a game.

If you're coffee lovers, let's find time for a latte.

If you love adventure, let's plan a day filled with beautiful locations and experiences you can enjoy together.

If you'd rather have a slow, romantic day with a beautiful ceremony and a cozy lunch, that's perfect too.

There is no need to include traditions or details simply because you think you're supposed to.

Your wedding day is about celebrating your relationship. It should reflect who you are, what you love, and the experiences that bring you together.

That's what I want to create with every couple I photograph.

With 15 years of experience photographing intimate weddings in Banff and the Canadian Rockies, I help couples with much more than just their photographs.
